Dr. Efstathios (Stathis) Giaouris graduated from the Department of Agricultural Biotechnology of the Agricultural University of Athens (2002), and is a holder of a Master’s Degree (MSc) in "Food Science and Technology" from the Department of Food Science and Technology (2003) and of a PhD Degree in Agricultural Sciences, scientific field of Food Microbiology, from the same University (2008). An important part of his doctoral thesis (2004-08) was executed at the Units of (i) Bacterial Biochemistry, and (ii) Bioadhesion and Hygiene of Materials, of the French National Institute of Agricultural Research (INRA-AgroParisTech, Research Centre of Jouy-en-Josas, Paris), where he worked for 20 months, as a recipient of a European Union Marie Curie fellowship (for Early-Stage Research Training). He conducted postdoctoral research at the Laboratory of Microbiology and Biotechnology of Foods at the Agricultural University of Athens, through a 12-month scholarship provided by the Greek State Scholarship Foundation (IKY). He was appointed Lecturer of Food Microbiology at the Department of Food Science and Nutrition of the University of the Aegean in 2010, promoted to the rank of Assistant Professor in 2014 and further promoted to the rank of Associate Professor in 2021. So far, he has participated as a research associate in several funded research projects related to food microbiology, hygiene, and safety, while as a faculty member/principal investigator he continues to participate in research project submissions and supervision, pursuing collaborations with other academics, research bodies and food businesses. He is the author or co-author of more than 60 research articles in international scientific peer-reviewed journals (which have attracted over 2300 citations from other researchers, h index 25, Scopus), 9 chapters in collective English volumes, while he has also announced his research project more than 100 times in national (Greek) and international conferences. He has supervised over 50 experimental Graduate Theses on food microbiology, hygiene, and safety issues. He has been an invited member of the editorial board of more than 10 international scientific peer-reviewed Journals, including “Food Microbiology (Elsevier)”, “Food Research International (Elsevier)”, “International Dairy Journal (Elsevier)”, “Journal of Food Processing and Preservation (Wiley and Hindawi)”, “Journal of Food Quality (Wiley and Hindawi)”, “Foods (MDPI)”, and “Journal of Food Protection (IAFP, Elsevier)”, he is associate editor in “Heliyon Food Science and Nutrition (Cell Press)” and “Frontiers in Food Microbiology”, guest associate editor in “Frontiers in Microbial Physiology and Metabolism” and “Frontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology”, invited reviewer in more than 80 international scientific peer-reviewed Journals related to microbiology and/or more general food science (having evaluated > 400 works), reviewer and specialist expert of research proposals to national and international organizations, member of the management committee of one COST action (FA1202), integrated into the Registry of Certified Assessors of the Greek General Secretariat for Research and Innovation (GSRI), member of the Hellenic Scientific Society of Mikrobiokosmos, of the Hellenic Association of Food Scientists and Technologists (HELAFST), of the food safety working group of the Greek Technology Platform "Food For Life", and he is integrated into the Unified Register of Trainers of Hellenic Food Authority (EFET), as a trainer of staff working in the food industry and food control agencies on topics of food hygiene and safety.
